African Music - There will be extensive questions on African Music in the test. Firstly, you must be able to define what Membranophone, Aerophone, Idiophone and Chordiphone are. You will need to know roughly where different instruments sit underneath these categories. Secondly, you must be able to identify and explain what call and response, improvisation, singing in harmony are. These two are technical things that you must know. You will also be asked questions about the nature of African Music, so how has its context shaped its sound and development. The link between the early African musicians and the birth of Jazz and other linked music.
Modes - You must be able to identify the following modes - Dorian, Lydian and Aeolian Modes. What notes are used in them etc.
